Surah Al-Baqarah 53: Your Clear Guide to a Better Life By Mufti Maaz Haroon
Allah says in the Quran:
“And remember when We gave Musa the Book and the Criterion so that you may be guided.” (Surah Al-Baqarah: 53)
This verse is a reminder of a great gift from Allah to a people called Bani Israel. After saving them from Fir‘awn (Pharaoh) and showing them many wonders, Allah didn’t leave them lost. He gave them a holy book, the Tawrah, through Prophet Musa (peace be upon him). Along with the Tawrah, Allah also gave them Furqan. This means a clear way to tell what is true from what is false, and what is right from what is wrong.
What Does ‘Furqan’ Really Mean?
‘Furqan’ is more than just a book. It’s like a special light that helps you see the right path and avoid mistakes. The Tawrah explained many things:
- What to believe
- How to live
- Good behavior
- How to be fair in society
It became a complete guide for Bani Israel’s lives.
Why Do We Need Guidance from Allah?
Allah clearly says why He sent guidance:
“So that you may be guided.“
This means people cannot create true guidance by themselves. Our minds are limited, and we often let our wishes guide us. So, Allah sent down messages (like the Quran) to keep people from getting lost or confused. Real guidance always comes only from Allah.
Important Lessons for Us Today
This verse isn’t just for Bani Israel. It’s a reminder for us now:
- The Quran is Our Guide: Just like the Tawrah guided them, the Quran guides us.
- The Quran is Our ‘Furqan’: It helps us tell truth from lies.
- Societies Need Allah’s Guidance: Without it, things can get messy and confusing.
- Action is Key: Knowing facts isn’t enough; we must follow them.
- Real Success: Comes from living by the Book, not just reading it.
Many people today feel confused or worried. They look for peace in money, fame, or relationships. But Allah has already given us the answer: His Book, the Quran. If you hold onto the Quran firmly, you will never get lost.
Using the Quran in Our Daily Lives
Whenever we face a challenge, we should turn to the Quran:
- Confusion in decisions? The Quran gives clarity.
- Doubts about faith? The Quran gives answers.
- Problems with family or friends? Find solutions there.
- Facing moral choices? The Quran shows the right path.
It has answers for every problem. It teaches us to be patient, honest, thankful, fair, and to trust Allah.
The Main Message
Surah Al-Baqarah verse 53 teaches us that Allah never leaves His servants without help. He always sends guidance through His messages. The real sadness is not that we lack guidance, but that we sometimes ignore it.
May Allah help us to:
- Read the Quran
- Understand it
- Act upon its teachings
- Share its message with others
Ameen.
