Verse 44 – Surah Al-Baqarah
“Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?” (2:44)
Tafsiri Reflection
In this verse, Allah ﷻ addresses the scholars of Bani Israel — but the message echoes to all who claim knowledge, faith, or moral guidance.
They used to instruct others to do good — “Pray, obey Allah, stay away from sin” — yet they themselves failed to act upon those same commands. Allah reminds them that true guidance begins from within.
Knowledge is not meant for speeches only; it’s meant for transformation. When a person advises others but ignores himself, his words lose their light and the soul becomes accustomed to hypocrisy.
Allah is asking every believer: “How can you remind others of the path, while forgetting your own steps?” Real da’wah (calling to Allah) starts with self-rectification and then extends outward.
It’s not about perfection — it’s about sincerity. If we fall short, we should still remind others, but with humility, saying:
“This is something I too struggle with, but let’s strive together.”
That attitude keeps advice alive and hearts soft.
Lessons from the Ayah
- Practice before preaching: Knowledge becomes powerful only when it is lived.
- Self-accountability: Before correcting others, purify your own actions.
- Sincerity matters: Allah values hearts that act with ikhlāṣ, not those that speak without intention.
- Reminding others is still good: The verse forbids neglecting yourself, not advising others.
- Acting on knowledge brings barakah: When deeds follow knowledge, Allah places nūr (light) in your words.
- Faith is reflection, not performance: Religion is about living truthfully before Allah, not appearance.
Reflection for Today’s Believers
In our age of social media and public da’wah, this verse is a mirror. Posting verses and reminders is beautiful — but the real reminder is the one we live.
Let’s not become voices that echo truth while our own hearts are silent. Let’s be souls that live truth even when no one is watching.
