The brief Summary and Tafsir of verse 37 surah Baqarah | By Mufti Maaz Haroon
⸻
Then Adam received from his Lord some some words (to pray with), so He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is he, who is Accepting the repentance, the very Merciful. (2:37)
Verse Summary
After Adam (A.S.) and Hawwa (Eve) ate from the forbidden tree, they instantly felt regret and guilt. They wanted to apologize but didn’t know how to express it. So, out of pure mercy, Allah Himself taught Adam the special words of repentance — a dua that came directly from divine guidance. Adam sincerely recited those words, and Allah immediately forgave him.
The Words Adam AS Received
Many scholars, including Mujahid, Ibn Abbas, and Qatadah, explain that the words Adam received are echoed in Surah Al-A’raf (7:23):
رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ·
Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.
These words reflect humility, acknowledgment of sin, and hope in Allah’s mercy.
This verse tells a powerful story: even when humans fail, Allah doesn’t abandon them. Instead, He reaches out and shows them the way back. Adam didn’t have to “earn” forgiveness by himself — Allah guided him to it. That’s the depth of Allah’s mercy and love.

Modern Reflection
For people today — especially Gen Z — this verse carries a life-changing message. Everyone makes mistakes. We all have moments when we know we’ve messed up or drifted away from what’s right. But this ayah reminds us that Allah isn’t waiting to punish — He’s waiting to guide.
When we feel lost, Allah gives us signs, reminders, or even puts the right words in our hearts to turn back to Him. Repentance (tawbah) isn’t about shame; it’s about reconnecting with the One who still believes in us even when we don’t believe in ourselves.

Final Takeaway
Allah not only forgives — He even teaches us how to seek forgiveness.
He doesn’t just tell us what’s wrong; He shows us the path to make it right. That’s the ultimate proof of His mercy — He helps us heal the very wounds we caused ourselves.
