Why Gratitude Matters: A Simple Lesson from Surah Al-Baqarah 2:57 By Mufti Maaz Haroon

Imagine you’re in a vast, hot desert. No roof, no trees, no shade. No food, no water. You feel lost and alone. Then, something amazing happens. Mercy comes from the sky.Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:57): “And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails…”This isn’t just an old story. It shows Allah’s great power and care for us.

A Gift from the Sky: Allah’s Care for Bani Israel

The people of Bani Israel had just escaped from a cruel ruler, Pharaoh. They were free, but also scared. “What will we eat? Where will we live? How will we survive?” they wondered. And Allah answered them, not with words, but with actions. He showed them: “When My servant has no help left, I become his help.”

Food and Shelter from Above

  • Clouds became their roof, protecting them from the sun.
  • Manna (a sweet, bread-like food) fed their hunger.
  • Quails (birds) gave them strength.

They didn’t have to farm, go to a market, or even work hard for food. It was a direct gift from Allah.

The Test of Gratitude

Allah then gave them a simple command: “Eat from the pure things We have provided for you.”This was more than just food. It was a test of how thankful they would be.

The Sad Truth: Complaints

But some of them started to complain. They said, “We are tired of the same food. We want something different!”Think about it. If someone complains about food sent directly from heaven, how will they ever be happy with food from the earth?

Why Ingratitude Hurts YOU

Allah ends the verse by saying: “They did not wrong Us, but they wronged themselves.”

Not Harming Allah, But Yourself

When we complain or are ungrateful:

  • It doesn’t harm Allah or make His kingdom smaller.
  • But the person who complains loses out. They lose:
    • Peace of heart
    • Blessings in their life
    • The sweetness of faith

This is the biggest unfairness – being unfair to your own self.

Our Lives Today: Are We Grateful?

Now, look at us. We are not in a desert. We have:

  • Homes to live in
  • Food to eat
  • Clothes to wear
  • Comforts all around us

Still Complaining?

Yet, many of us often say: “Life is hard. Nothing is enough. There’s no blessing (barakah).”If people who saw real miracles could complain, what excuse will we have before Allah?

A Heartfelt Reminder

If we tried to count all of Allah’s blessings, we would never finish. But our complaints often seem endless.

Remember these important points:

  • Blessings stay with a thankful heart.
  • Complaints can bring loss.
  • Gratitude (Shukr) protects what we already have.
  • Ungratefulness can take away even what little remains.

May Allah make us among those who see His favors, thank Him truly, and never harm our own souls. Ameen.
