Question:

Is this Hadīth authentic: When one hears the mu’adhdhin saying Ash-hadu Anna Muhammadar Rasūlullāh, he must kiss his thumbs and pass them over his eyes?

Answer:

There are objections to this Hadīth. Sakhāwī is of the opinion that it is not authentic. As for the narration which is from Hadrat Khidr, in
addition to its narrators being unknown, its sanad is munqati‛. This is why it cannot be furnished as proof. The opinions of the assessors of Hadīth can be found in:

It is mentioned in Fatāwā Kanz al-‛Ibād, Fatāwā Sūfīyyah and other books but these are unreliable.
Apart from this, this practice has been shown as a treatment for ailments of the eyes. It must not be done with the intention of reward.
