The Price of over questioning | Surah Baqarah 70

Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 70 Tafsir by Mufti Maaz Haroon

Alright, let’s continue the story step by step.

So far, Bani Israel have already asked about:
• The age of the cow
• The color of the cow

And Allah answered both clearly.

Now, what do they do next?

Instead of obeying…
They ask yet another question.

They said to Musa (AS):

“Ask your Lord to make it clear to us exactly which cow it is, because all cows seem similar to us. And if Allah wills, we will be guided.”

Now notice something very important here.

They are saying:

“All cows look the same to us.”

But is that really true?

No.

There are always differences.
But because they kept delaying, now they are confused themselves.

Also notice their words:

“If Allah wills, we will be guided.”

This sounds good… but their actions don’t match.
• They are still not obeying
• They are still delaying
• They are still asking again and again

So their problem is not lack of clarity…
Their problem is lack of action

Think about it.

First command: sacrifice a cow
Then questions about age
Then about color
Now about exact details

The task is becoming more and more difficult

And all of this is happening because they didn’t obey in the beginning.

And it has connection with our life…!
Sometimes we say:
• “I’ll do it later”
• “I don’t understand fully”
• “Let me ask one more thing”

But in reality…

We are just delaying what we already know we should do.

Lessons to learn

This ayah teaches us:
• Delaying obedience leads to confusion
• Too many unnecessary questions make things harder
• Saying good words is not enough—actions matter

For memorization

Bani Israel continued asking questions, saying all cows looked the same to them. Their delay and over-questioning made the task more difficult, teaching us to obey quickly and sincerely.
